Purpose: The objective of this study was to evaluate the anatomical
and functional results and complications in the surgical treatment
of paediatric cataract consecutive to uveitis.
Methods: Between 1990 and 2001, 17 eyes of 14 children were submitted
to cataract surgery secondary to uveitis (chronic anterior uveitis
15 eyes, 1 pars planitis and 1 pan uveitis): lensectomy via pars plicata,
anterior vitrectomy and lysis anterior synechiae (13 eyes) and double
capsulorhexis, extracapsular extraction, anterior vitrectomy and implantation
of an heparin surfaced modified intraocular lens (4 eyes). The aphakia
was corrected with soft contact lenses (7 eyes) and glasses (6 eyes).
Follow-up between 3 months and 5 years.
Results: Post-op visual acuity (VA) ranged from 1/10 to 10/10 (9 eyes
had a VA > 6/10). Giant cells (2 cases) and a dense membrane (1
case) over the anterior surface of the IOL were observed.
Conclusion: Lensectomy and anterior vitrectomy appears to be a safe
procedure to treat cataract in children with uveitis. The use of intraocular
lenses should be cautious.
