PURPOSE: To characterise orthoptic findings in healthy term Swedish children. METHODS: A cross-sectional investigation according to a specially designed orthoptic schedule, including Hirschberg, cover test at 3 m (in five positions) and at 0.3 m (with and without addition of +3 diopters(D), motility, ocular torticollis, AC/A ratio (gradient and heterotropian method) binocular single vision (with TNO random dot test) and near point of convergence (NPC) with RAF ruler has been performed on 136 healthy children, 62 girls and 74 boys. All children were born at >=37 gestational weeks, had a birth weight > -2SD and were measured with best correction. There were at least five girls and five boys in each age class. RESULTS: Five children (3.7%) were found to have heterotropia, three out of five children with heterotropia were detected with the Hirschberg test. Distance heterophoria ranged from -10 prism diopters (PD) to +8PD. Two or more PD
